Spring is a pleasant time. However, the weather can be unstable, and it’s mixed with sunny days and occasional showers. When it is bright and sunny, the city glows. It feels like the perfect time to walk around the streets, spot the front gardens of the brownstone buildings, the church’s public gardens, a community garden or one of the secret gardens around the city.

So what is happening now?

Kwanzan cherries are losing their petals and create beautiful petals, rain and pinkish carpets.
Eastern Redbuds are still in peak bloom. It seems like the city planted many of them as street trees, which is a brilliant idea because they have stunning flowers in spring, big beautiful leaves for shade during the summer and lovely foliage in fall.
But if you would ask me, this is the Dogwood trees’ prime. They have reached their peak bloom, and you can find them in gardens, churches’ gardens and in some townhouses’ front gardens.

Here are some pictures I took in the past three days:

On Sunday, I got to visit Little island for the first time.
It is a beautiful architectural project with some beautiful flowers and trees.
However, it was bustling and felt more like a hike than a park where you can sit a relax.
From May 12, entering the park will be via timed reservations only.

Japanese Wisteria

I was able to spot a few blooming Wisterias around the city already.
However, many others have leaves with no flowers yet.

May has finally arrived, which is a sign of warmer temperatures for the five boroughs. Therefore, beautiful blossoms are in the present and decorate parks and streets everywhere. Personally, May is a starting point of the picnic season that can last until September. This is a great time to spend outdoors, in your neighborhood park, or gather in one of the big ones around the big apple.

So what is happening now?

Kwanzan cherries are in full bloom all around the city.
The Brooklyn Botanic Garden has announced that its Cherry Esplanade has reached peak bloom, and it is stunning. You can get more information on its cherry watch page.
Eastern Redbudsare also in peak bloom, and they are no less gorgeous.
Dogwood trees have also reached their peak blossom, and you can find them in white and pink.
And, of course, the tulips are blooming almost in every corner. Whether it’s a planter, below a street tree, or in the parks, they are absolutely stunning.

Here are some pictures I took in the past three days:

Some of the Crabapples’ blossoms around the city have started to fade. However, some still look great. Check out these pictures I took yesterday in Greenpoint, Brooklyn.

Although NYC has experienced pretty cold days, Spring is still around, and it is warm enough for trees all around the city to keep on blooming. This upcoming weekend looks great to catch those flowers in white, yellow and pink and admire them. But with all due respect the true stars of the show for this weekend are the tulips.

Here are some pictures I took few days ago at Cobble Hill in Brooklyn

As you can see, Crabapples around the city are in full bloom and they are beautiful.

Eastern redbuds are also in full bloom. You can find then in pink, purple and white.

Kwanzan Cherry are in full bloom in most places In the city. However, the ones in the Brooklyn Botanic Garden are still in their pre-bloom stage, according to their cherry watch page.

Tulips

One of the most anticipated symbols of spring are the tulips. They are blooming in street’s planters, along Park Avenue and in many other places around the city.

A lovely Friday to spend at Brooklyn Botanic Garden.
The past few days had mild temperatures, which accelerated things even more. As a result, cherry trees around the Garden are in full bloom. Also, it was nice to have the chance to admire the beauty of the yellow Saucer Magnolia, which usually blooms in mid-April, unlike the pink Saucer Magnolia, which dried during March 30 freeze. Crabapple trees were also stunning, as well as the peach tree.
I could notice a Kwanzan Cherry that had just started to bloom.

Here are some pictures I took today at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden

What’s Next?

It was an unpredictable Saturday. It began with morning sun, then rain, partly cloudy into the rain again, and then mostly cloudy and a bit chilly.
However, the weather didn’t stop thousands of visitors from coming to Central Park to catch their perfect selfie with the peak bloom of the Cherry trees.
And it was indeed a magical day with blooming trees in every corner. When you think you have reached the best part, another white spot is on the horizon. It doesn’t matter if you visited the great lake or Cherry Hill. You still got the perfect shot.
Although Cherry trees (Yoshino Cherry) are the main attraction this weekend, Star Magnolias are still blooming and look stunning. White and pink, large and small.

Here are some pictures I took today at Central Park

What’s Next?

Crabapple

Crabapples are making progress, and they are almost there.
Here are some pictures I took from Central Park:

Lilly Magnolia

Lilly Magnolias are still in their early stage. However, they have been developing nice big green buds.
You can find them near the Bow bridge.

Tulips

As I first posted on 04 April repost, you can see some early-blooming tulips around the city. However, most of them are only halfway there.
It will take them another week or two. However, the city should get above-average temperatures next week, giving them another push towards their show.
Here’s a picture of blooming tulips from the area of the Central Park Zoo and another one near Park Avenue:

The Big Apple got its white fluff blanket, and I’m not talking about snow. Central Park looks like a fairy tale kingdom. The Cherry trees have reached their peak bloom, and you can find them all over the park. I took a walk today from the Met downtown and saw many big blooming trees in beautiful white and pink.
Star magnolias also show off their white and pink-purple flowers, adding an extra touch to the surrounding view. You can find some near the Bethesda Fountain.
This is an exciting time for New Yorkers to finally go outside and enjoy this beauty.

Callery Pears are still in full bloom all around NYC. That means that you can walk around the street of NYC and admire their beauty.

March 31 brought aggressive precipitation to the entire northeast region, which could be harsh for petals, especially for the Cherry trees. Unfortunately, it happened in Washington DC in the Tidal Basin area, which brought many petals to the ground.
Luckily, New York is usually two weeks behind, which means the Cherry Blossom can proceed to its next stage of peak bloom. That’s some good news after the horrible freezing that ruined the bloom of the Saucer Magnolias around the city.
According to the reports around the city, as some of you might have seen in our Instagram stories during the weekend, Cherry blossom has arrived in NYC, and you can spot many kinds of cherry trees around the city.

Recent reports from Instagram:

What to expect for the coming week

March 30, 2022

It has been a tough cold week that brought some freezing temperatures. Usually, colder days are expected in March. However, some flowers can’t survive the freezing temperatures for an extended period.

Sadly many Magnolias around NYC that were blooming and reached their peak bloom didn’t make it, and their flowers dried out from the freeze.

On the bright side, if there is such one, there are still some Magnolias in their early stages and have not exposed their petals just yet. Therefore, with the warmth we have on the horizon, we should expect some of the Magnolia beauty.

What is next?

The Yoshino Cherry trees are very close to painting the city and the Park in white.
The past cold week delayed their progression, and you can expect them to proceed to their following stages in the upcoming week.

Callery Pears are in the same situation and thankfully didn’t bloom to meet the freezing temperatures. However, the upcoming warm days will do their magic, and you can expect them to bloom within a few days to a week.

Eastern Redbud trees already have pretty tiny buds, and they should bloom with their little flowers by mid-April.

Now you can see What’s in bloom in the Home page.

It is a milder Friday after some heavy rain we had last night.
Birds are out, and so are the bees.
The city’s bloom had an excellent progression, and you can spot more and more flowers around the city.
I visited Central Park to see the Okame cherry trees on the west side of the great lake (Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Reservoir).
It is easy to spot them along Bridge Path.

Here are some of the Okame cherry trees that are in peak bloom.
The heavy rain and the wind caused some of them to lose part of their petals, which created a pretty pink floor. However, most petals are still strong and hanging on the trees.
Within a week, these cherry trees will enter their post-bloom stage.

The Yoshino Cherry

Yoshino Cherry (or Japanese Flowering Cherry) is the one most are looking for with a bit of almond-scented and whitish-pink blossoms, which bloom in spring on magnificent bare branches.
You should expect their peak bloom in the city around the second week of April.
However, 2022 provided the big apple with above-average temperatures, which should speed up things a little and bring an early bloom as soon as April 1. But, of course, it depends on the temperatures of the upcoming days.

Here are some pictures from Central Park I took today:

Beautiful days with more sunshine and high temperatures are doing an excellent job for small-medium trees around the city.

Many Daffodils are blooming around the city.

Magnolia Trees are near peak bloom. It seems like by Saturday, some of them will approach peak bloom. For some, it will take another few days to another week.

I took this (blurry) picture today at Greenpoint, Brooklyn.

This Sweetgum tree is making a remarkable progression, and the bird seems to love it.

Cherry Blossom – NYC Vs Washington DC

As for March 21, The National Pard Service arborists have judged that the cherry blossoms around the Tidal basin in the Capital have reached peak bloom.
It usually takes 2-3 more weeks for the city, depending on the weather.

For comparison, in 2021, cherry blossom had peaked bloom on March 21, while NYC reached the peak bloom on April 7.
