Fellow leaf peepers, Roy here! After a warm start to the season, our patience has finally paid off. Over the past two weeks, a significant drop in nighttime temperatures here in the city has sparked a rapid color shift, propelling New York City well beyond the “Minimal” phase.
We’re now officially in the Peak Color stage. The canopy across the five boroughs has exchanged its subtle summer greens for vibrant streaks of gold, orange, and early crimson. If you’re looking for an excuse to grab a hot cider and take a walk, this weekend is the absolute perfect time to head out and witness the city’s stunning autumn transformation.
Current City Status: Peak Color
As of November 9th, New York City is officially showing off. The overall color change across the city is between 75% and 85%, with our major parks leading the charge and the concrete jungle catching up.
The city’s color palette is currently dominated by bright yellows and golds, thanks to species like Ash and Honey Locust trees hitting their golden prime. Scattered throughout, you’ll find striking patches of red, particularly from the early-turning Red Maples in low-lying, well-watered areas.
🍂 Local Spotlight: Where to go this weekend
These areas are ahead of the city average, thanks to elevation or microclimates!
- Central Park (North Woods & The Ramble): Isolated pockets, particularly older trees and those in the quieter, northern sections, are showcasing brilliant yellows and vibrant reds. A must-visit for NYC locals!
- Prospect Park, Brooklyn: Keep an eye out around the lake and the Ravine area. The maples here are putting on a spectacular show right now.
- Upper Hudson Valley (Day Trip): Need to escape the city? Areas like Dutchess and Westchester counties are seeing 60% to 75% color change. Expect breathtaking bright reds, yellows, and oranges.

While the city’s foliage is spectacular right now, choosing the best location for a wider leaf-peeping road trip can be a daunting task. Fortunately, there are fantastic local resources to help you chase the colors across the Northeast:
- New York State (I Love NY) – Gives a weekly report on foliage progression around NY state based on volunteer field observers. Reports are issued every Wednesday.
- Maine – The state’s official website covers seven different zones and tracks six levels of foliage status.
- Pennsylvania – PA DCNR follows the fall season with complete reports across all PA regions, also using 6 different stages.
- Vermont – Features reports from the “Leaf Squad” with a simple, easy-to-read four-stage foliage level system.
- New Hampshire – Provides detailed zone-based information instead of just visual maps, great for precise planning.
